Description

Propionic acid, CH3CH2COOH, also known as propanoic acid and methylacetic acid, is a clear, colorless liquid that boils at 140°C (284 OF). It is flammable. It has a pungent odor and is soluble in water and alcohol. The Odor Threshold is 0.16 ppm. Propionic acid is an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid. Propionic acid is used in nickel electroplating solutions, perfumes, artificial flavors, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing propionates.

Propionic acid Use and Manufacturing

1. Mainly used as food preservative and mildew inhibitor. It can also be used as an inhibitor for medium viscosity substances such as beer. Used as nitrocellulose solvent and plasticizer. It is also used in the preparation of nickel plating solution, the preparation of food flavors, and the manufacture of medicines, pesticides, and mold inhibitors. 2. Organic synthesis raw materials are used to synthesize propylene salt, propionate ester, vinyl propionate ester, allyl cellulose, etc. Propionic acid is a safe food preservative that can inhibit bacterial growth. It is also an effective organic acid preservative in the storage of grain and feed. It has a strong bacteriostatic effect on various molds, aerobic bacillus or gram-negative bacilli. Using propionic acid as an aerosol can prevent mildew on bread and other foods. It is also used as a solvent and plasticizer for nitrocellulose. It can also be used as a reagent for measuring aromatic diamines and acidulants. 3. Cosmetics are used as hair tonics, anti-dandruff and itching agents
