Dicyclohexylamine was detected in 2 of 9 biologically treated effluent samples from a bleached Kraft mill, at a mean concentration of 60 ug/l(1). Trench leachates from Maxey Flats, Kentucky and West Valley, NY low-level radioactive waste disposal sites, contained unspecified levels of dicyclohexylamine(2).
URBAN/SUBURBAN: Dicyclohexylamine was identified in ambient air samples from Lake Charles, LA(1).
Dicyclohexylamine was detected in fresh machine cutting-fluid emulsions at a concentration of 18.8 ug/g(1).
Toxicity
LD50 Rat oral is 373 mg/kg
Dicyclohexylamine is not known to occur as a natural product; it occurs as metabolites of cyclamates
Dicyclohexylamine's production and use as a chemical intermediate; in insecticides and plasticizers; as a corrosion inhibitor; as an antioxidant in rubber, lubricating oils, and fuels; as a catalyst for paint, varnishes, and inks; as a detergent and as an extractant(1) will result in its release to the environment(SRC).
TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a recommended classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 260(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that dicyclohexylamine is expected to have moderate mobility in soil(SRC). Volatilization of dicyclohexylamine from moist soil surfaces is expected given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 5.5X10-5 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), using a fragment constant estimation method(3). Dicyclohexylamine is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces based on an estimated vapor pressure of 3.4X10-2 mm Hg(4).|AQUATIC FATE: Based on a recommended classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 260(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that dicyclohexylamine is expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment in water(SRC). Dicyclohexylamine is expected to volatilize from water surfaces(3,SRC) based on an estimated Henry's Law constant of 5.5X10-5 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), developed using a fragment constant estimation method(4). Estimated volatilization half-lives for a model river and model lake are 1.1 and 12 days, respectively(3,SRC). According to a classification scheme(5), an estimated BCF value of 1200(3,SRC), from an estimated log Kow of 4.37(6,SRC), suggests that bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is very high(SRC). A biodegradation study based on BOD measurements, using an activated sludge seed, and an initial concentration of 100 mg/l, indicated 76.9% degradation of dicyclohexylamine after 2 weeks(7).|ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), dicyclohexylamine, which has an experimental vapor pressure of 3.4X10-2 mm Hg at 25 °C(2), is expected to exist solely as a vapor in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase dicyclohexylamine is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be about 2.9 hours(3,SRC).
The rate constant for the vapor-phase reaction of dicyclohexylamine with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals has been estimated as 1.3X10-10 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) using a structure estimation method(1,SRC). This corresponds to an atmospheric half-life of about 2.9 days at an atmospheric concentration of 5X10+5 hydroxyl radicals per cu cm(1,SRC). Dicyclohexylamine is not expected to undergo direct photolysis in the environment due to the lack of functional groups to absorb light in the environmental spectrum(SRC).
An estimated BCF value of 1200 was calculated for dicyclohexylamine(SRC), using an estimated log Kow of 4.37(1,SRC) and a recommended regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF value suggests that bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is very high(SRC).
Using a structure estimation method based on molecular connectivity indices(1), the Koc for dicyclohexylamine can be estimated to be about 260(SRC). According to a recommended classification scheme(2), this estimated Koc value suggests that dicyclohexylamine is expected to have moderate mobility in soil(SRC).
The Henry's Law constant for dicyclohexylamine is estimated as 5.5X10-5 atm-cu m/mole(SRC) using a fragment constant estimation method(1). This value indicates that dicyclohexylamine will volatilize from water surfaces(2,SRC). Based on this Henry's Law constant, the volatilization half-life from a model river (1 m deep, flowing 1 m/sec, wind velocity of 3 m/sec) is estimated as approximately 1.1 days(2,SRC). The volatilization half-life from a model lake (1 m deep, flowing 0.05 m/sec, wind velocity of 0.5 m/sec) is estimated as approximately 12 days(2,SRC). Dicyclohexylamine's Henry's Law constant of 5.5X10-5 atm-cu m/mole(1,SRC) indicates that volatilization from moist soil surfaces is expected to occur(SRC). Dicyclohexylamine is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces based on an experimental vapor pressure of 3.4X10-2 mm Hg(3).
SURFACE WATER: Dicyclohexylamine was detected in Rhine water samples taken from Lobith and Werkendam, The Netherlands in 1989, at 0.015 and 0.025 ug/l, respectively(1).
NIOSH (NOES Survey 1981-1983) has statistically estimated that 2900 workers are potentially exposed to dicyclohexylamine in the US(1). Occupational exposure to dicyclohexylamine may occur through inhalation and dermal contact with this compound at workplaces where it is produced or used(SRC).

EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop. SKIN: IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. If symptoms such as redness or irritation develop, IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital for treatment. INHALATION: IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air. If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital. Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or equal to that advised under Protective Clothing. INGESTION: DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. If the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give 1 or 2 glasses of water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center. Be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital if advised by a physician. If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth, ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital. (NTP, 1992)
