1-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-33-dimethylindoline-6-nitrobenzospiropyran is a tri-state photochromic compound that produces optical output in response to chemical optical input. Under the irradiation of ultraviolet light, the colorless spiropyran configuration (SP) can be transformed into a purple partial cyanine configuration (ME). In addition, the SP is acidified and converted into yellow-green proton cyanine (MEH). When irradiated with visible light, the colored ME and MEH are converted to the colorless SP state. The same ME stored in the dark can be converted to SP state. ME is added with acid to generate MEH. MEH is converted to ME after alkali treatment. These studies on molecular application properties are being actively carried out.
