Explosive when mixed with air

Stable. Very flammable - note low flash point. Vapour may travel considerable distances to a source of ignition. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, alcohols, halides, sopper, aluminium. Rapidly absorbs oxygen from the air and forms explosive peroxides. Light and water promote self-polymerisation. May form explosive mix

Vinylidene chloride Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

The industrial preparation method is to prepare 1, 1, 2-trichloroethane with vinyl chloride and chlorine gas at 80~90℃ using iron filings as the catalyst, and then carry out trichloroethane and sodium hydroxide at 80~90℃ In the reaction, one molecule of hydrogen chloride is removed to obtain crude vinylidene chloride, and then the finished product is obtained by distillation. Reaction equation: CH2=CHCl[Cl2]→[FeCl3]CH2Cl—CHCl2[NaOH]→CH2=CCl2

Uses

Intermediate in the production of "vinylidene polymer plastics" such as Saran (Dow) .
