Magneson Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Dissolve 138 g of p-nitroaniline in 250 ml of hot concentrated hydrochloric acid, cool to 0-5 °C, and drop into a saturated aqueous solution containing 85 g of nitrous acid with stirring, the temperature does not exceed 5 °C. Then 100 g of resorcinol and dilute alkaline solution were added to this diazonium salt solution. The coupling product is filtered, dried and recrystallized with alcohol to obtain p-nitrobenzene azoresorcinol.

Uses

For the detection of magnesium with which it yields a bright blue color in alkaline solution. Also used to determine molybdenum with which it forms a red-violet complex:Nikitina, Andrianova, C.A. 75, 136789v (1971).
