Description

Red crystals. Insoluble in water and ammonia; soluble in acids. The cobalt carbonate of commerce is usually the basic salt (see following entry). This occurs naturally as sphaerocobaltite. It can be precipitated as the violet-red hexahydrate CoCO3. 6H2O from aqueous solutions of cobalt(II) salts and an alkali metal bicarbonate if the reaction is carried out under an atmosphere of carbon dioxide. In the absence of carbon dioxide basic salts are precipitated in these reactions. The hydrate is de

COBALT CARBONATE Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Chemical method Cobalt sulfate reacts with sodium carbonate, washed with water, separated, dried, pulverized, and sieved to obtain basic cobalt carbonate products. It is difficult to obtain pure products. Its 5COSO4·7H2O+5Na2CO3→2CoCO3·3Co(OH)2·H2O+5Na2SO4+3CO2+H2O

Uses

It is used as a chemical reagent and is a raw material for making cobalt salts. It is used as a coloring material for porcelain. At low temperatures, cobalt is commonly used for coloring. It is also used as an additive for electronic materials and magnetic materials. It is used as pH adjuster when making cobalt catalyst.

Ceramics, trace element added to soils and animal feed, temperature indicator, catalyst, pigments.
