Description
Arsenic iodide (AsI3) is an orange-red shiny crystal, toxic, with a pungent odor, a melting point of 146°C, a boiling point of 403°C, a relative density of 4.3918, a flash point of 424°C, slightly soluble in water, easily soluble in ethanol, ether, carbon disulfide, and soluble in organic solvents such as dimethylformamide (DMF) and acetonitrile. Arsenic iodide (AsI3) is a strong oxidant and a strong reducing agent, which can react with many substances and has a strong corrosive effect on flammable substances such as water, alcohol and ether. Arsenic iodide (AsI3) is obtained by dissolving As2O3 in concentrated hydrochloric acid, adding an aqueous solution of potassium iodide, filtering and drying, and can be used as an analytical reagent for analyzing chemistry, poisons and pharmaceuticals.

Reacts slowly with oxygen from the air, liberating iodine [Merck]. Water soluble. Aqueous solutions are strongly acidic (pH of 0.1N solution about 1.1) and ultimately form HI and As2O3, although an equilibrium AsI3 + 3H2O = H3AsO3 + 3HI has been observed [Merck 1989].

(Vet) Former use: For dermatitides in cats.|Former use: Donovan's Solution (Liquor arseni et hydrargyri iodidi) contains 1% each of arsenious iodide and mercuric iodide. Once used for syphilitic skin lesions, lymphadenitis and chronic joint diseases, this preparation is rarely used in present day therapeutics.
