Description

White powder. Absorbs moisture slowly if exposed to atmosphere. Soluble in alcohol, slightly soluble in water.


Pyromellitic acid is a tetracarboxylic acid that is benzene substituted by four carboxy groups at positions 1, 2, 4 and 5 respectively. It is a member of benzoic acids and a tetracarboxylic acid.


Dissolve it in 5.7 parts of hot dimethylformamide, decolorise, filter and cool. The precipitate is collected and dried in air. The solvent is removed by heating in an oven at 150-170o for several hours. It also crystallises from water. [Beilstein 9 H 997, 9 IV 3804.]

Methods of Manufacturing

It is obtained by oxidation of 1, 2, 4, 5-tetratoluene (or 5-isopropyl-1, 2, 4-trimethylbenzene), or by chloromethylation and oxidation of xylene.

Uses

1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid is used for the synthesis of the polyimide, pyromellitic octyl, etc., it is the main raw material of matting curing agent.
