Description

Spearmint oils are obtained by steam distillation of the flowering herbs ofMentha spicata L. ssp. spicata (native spearmint; in China and India alsofrom other varieties) andMentha x gracilis Sole (syn.Mentha cardiaca Ger.,Scotch spearmint). They are colorless to yellow-green liquids with a fresh,caraway, minty odor.

Spearmint oil Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

The spearmint whole plant, a perennial herb of the Lamiaceae family distributed in Zhejiang, Henan, Sichuan, Jiangsu, Guangxi, Jiangxi, Guangdong and Anhui, is used as raw material, and it is obtained by distillation on water. The oil yield is 0.3% ~ 0.6% ( See Asian Peppermint Oil 22045).

Uses

Mainly used in the preparation of toothpaste and chewing gum flavor. As a food spice, it is the main raw material of spearmint flavor. It can also be directly used in foods such as candy, chewing gum and cakes. The dosage is 830mg/kg in candy; 270mg/kg in baked food leaves; 100mg/kg in beverages; 100mg/kg in alcoholic beverages; 81mg/kg in cold drinks leaves; 75mg/kg in jellies. GB2760—96 stipulates that it is allowed to use edible spices. Mainly used in gum, hard candy, cakes and the preparation of spearmint flavor.

Drug Function and Efficacy

This product is a mucus regulator that mainly acts on the secretion of bronchial glands, increasing the secretion of low-viscosity salivary mucin and reducing the production of high-viscosity fucoxomucin, thereby reducing the viscosity of sputum and making it easier to cough up.
