Description
CLEAR COLOURLESS LIQUID Amyl alcohols (pentanols) have eight isomers. All are flammable, colorless liquids, except the isomer 2,2- dimethyl-1-propanol, which is a crystalline solid. 3-Methyl-2-butanol has a fruity, fresh odor.
3-methyl-2-butanol is a secondary alcohol that is 2-butanol carrying an additional methyl substituent at position 3. It has a role as a polar solvent and a plant metabolite. It derives from a hydride of an isopentane.

3-Methyl-2-butanol Use and Manufacturing
A solution of 600g 2-bromopropane and 300ml of ether was added dropwise to a mixture of 250ml of ether and 146g of magnesium. The reaction was cooled to -5°C, and a solution of 200g of acetaldehyde and 250ml of ether was slowly added. The reaction mixture was poured into 2 kg of crushed ice to decompose the magnesium salt, the excess magnesium was removed by decantation, and the alkaline magnesium halide was dissolved with 15% sulfuric acid. Separate the ether layer, fractionate and collect the 110-111.5°C fractions to obtain 210-215g of 3-methyl-2-butanol with a yield of 53-54%.
