Step 1 A 500 mL 3 -necked round bottom flask was charged with hydrazine hydrate (40 g, 0.80 mol) and EtOH (280 mL). To the above solution was added dropwise a solution of 4-methoxybenzylchloride (12.5 g, 0.080 mol) in EtOH (30 mL) at room temperature. The resulting mixture was stirred at 90 °C for 2 h. Work-up: the reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo then re-dissolved in EtOH (150 mL). The solution was acidified with 5 M HCl (120 mL) at 0 °C. The resulting precipitate was collected by filtration and dried to afford 8.72 g (72percent) of the product as white solid. MS m/z: 153 (M+H
