Preparation of 1-fluoro-4-isothiocyanato-5-methyl-2-nitro-benzene IV-a Fuming nitric acid (3.35 mL, 84 mmol) in concentrated sulfuric acid (10 mL) was added dropwise to a -5°C cooled solution of 4-fluoro-2-methyl-phenylamine (10.5 g, 84 mmol) in 90 mL of concentrated sulfuric acid. The reaction mixture was stirred at 0°C for 2h and cold water added (300 mL). Then, a cold solution of NaOH (10 N) was slowly added until pH=10 and the resultant precipitate was filtered off to give intermediate IV-e as yellow solid (12.7 g, 89percent).
