They are incompatible with many strong oxidizers and reducing agents, such as metal hydrides, alkali/active metals, and organometallics. Unlike the ammonium ion, [NH4]+, and the primary, secondary, or tertiary ammonium cations, the quaternary ammonium cations are permanently charged, independent of the pH of their solution.

TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 3X10+7(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that benzyldimethylstearylammonium chloride is expected to be immobile in soil(SRC). Volatilization of benzyldimethylstearylammonium chloride from moist soil surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 4.2X10-11 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), using a fragment constant estimation method(3). The general population may be exposed to benzyldimethylstearylammonium chloride by using consumer products containing benzyldimethylstearylammonium chloride(SRC).

Drug Information

Ingestion causes gastrointestinal disturbances. Contact with chemical irritates eyes and skin and may damage eyes. (USCG, 1999)

EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop. SKIN: IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. If symptoms such as redness or irritation develop, IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital for treatment. INHALATION: IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air. If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital. Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or equal to that advised under Protective Clothing. INGESTION: DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. If the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give 1 or 2 glasses of water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center. Be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital if advised by a physician. If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth, ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital. (NTP, 1992)

Methods of Manufacturing

Put 450 kg of dimethyl octadecylamine into the reaction kettle, heat to 80~85℃, and slowly add 180 kg of benzyl chloride within 1.5~2 h under stirring. Keep warm at 80~90℃ during the dropping. After the addition is completed, the temperature is raised to 100 ~ 105 ℃, and the pH value is measured by holding the reaction for several hours. When the pH value of the 1% aqueous solution reaches 6 to 6.5, the reaction is completed. After cooling to 60℃, the finished product can be obtained.

Uses

Used as a cationic dye and a leveling agent for dyeing acrylic fiber. Make the dyed fabric feel soft. This product has good flexibility to cellulose acetate, and has a sterilization and disinfection effect. It has good level dyeing properties for cationic dyes. It can be used in the same bath with cationic and nonionic surfactants. When dyeing acrylic fiber, the general dosage is 2% to 3%. To increase the dyeing rate, it can be increased to 3% to 5%. This product is mainly used as a thickening agent for grease, a medical bactericide, a textile wetting agent, a softener, and an antistatic agent. Has good stability.
