(NTP, 1992)|A sympathomimetic that acts mainly by causing release of NOREPINEPHRINE but also has direct agonist activity at some adrenergic receptors. It is most commonly used as a nasal vasoconstrictor and an appetite depressant.

Drugs designed to treat inflammation of the nasal passages, generally the result of an infection (more often than not the common cold) or an allergy related condition, e.g., hay fever. The inflammation involves swelling of the mucous membrane that lines the nasal passages and results in inordinate mucus production. The primary class of nasal decongestants are vasoconstrictor agents. SYMPTOMS: Exposure to the compound may cause nausea, nasal dryness, dizziness, headache, nervousness, rapid pulse, sleeplessness and palpitations. It may also cause acute interstitial nephritis, lassitude, restlessness, irritability, aggression, sleep disturbances, psychotic episodes, visual hallucinations, excitability, lack of concentration, paranoid misconceptions, episodic muscular twitchings, tingling feelings in the head, tightness of the chest, rash, tremor and tinnitus. Skin irritation may occur. ACUTE/CHRONIC HAZARDS: When heated to decomposition this compound emits very toxic fumes of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrogen chloride gas. EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. If symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop, immediately transport the victim to a hospital. SKIN: IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. If symptoms such as redness or irritation develop, IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital for treatment. INHALATION: IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air. If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital. Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or equal to that advised under Protective Clothing. INGESTION: DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. If the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give 1 or 2 glasses of water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center. Be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital if advised by a physician. If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth, ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital. (NTP, 1992)

Phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride Use and Manufacturing
The method described in US Patent 2151517 is to take a 50-liter aqueous solution of 10.7 kg of benzaldehyde and 11.0 kg of sodium bisulfite and shake it vigorously until the addition product is completely formed. At the same time, 8.25 kg of nitroethane was dissolved in 20 kg of aqueous solution of 4.5 kg of caustic soda, and the resulting hot solution was added to the thick liquid of sodium benzosulfite under vigorous stirring. The mixture was shaken for half an hour and left overnight From the oily phenylnitropropanol floating in the upper layer, a small amount of unreacted benzaldehyde was removed with 11.0 kg of sodium bisulfite in 50 liters of aqueous solution. The resulting phenylnitropropanol is a public oil. Weight 17.1-17.7 kg, boiling point 150-165 ℃ (0.665 kPa). The base is hydrogenated and converted to the hydrochloride salt, which is phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride.
DL-Norephedrine is a psychoactive amphetamine that acts as a potent norepinephrine releasing agent (EC50 = 42-137 nM). It is less effective as a dopamine releasing agent (EC50 = 0.3-1.4 μM) and does not affect serotonin release. This product is intended for forensic and research applications.[Cayman Chemical]
