The 5-androstene-3β-ol-17-one 3-acetate is catalytically hydrogenated with palladium on carbon, hydrolyzed and deacetylated, and then oxidized with chromic acid and sulfuric acid to open the ring to produce androsta-2, 3-closing- 17-keto-2, 3-dicarboxylic acid, heating the latter with acetic anhydride and anhydrous sodium acetate, refluxing and cyclizing the product.
