Description

ChEBI: The dihydrate of the disodium salt of balsalazide. A prodrug, releasing the anti-inflammatory 5-aminosalicylic acid (mesalazine) in the large intestine, it is used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis.

Balsalazide disodium is the dihydrate of the disodium salt of balsalazide. A prodrug, releasing the anti-inflammatory 5-aminosalicylic acid (mesalazine) in the large intestine, it is used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis. It has a role as a gastrointestinal drug, an anti-ulcer drug and a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. It is an organic sodium salt and a hydrate. It contains a balsalazide(2-). It derives from a balsalazide.|Balsalazide Disodium is the disodium salt form of balsalazide, an aminosalicylate and oral prodrug that is enzymatically cleaved in the colon to produce the anti-inflammatory agent mesalazine. Mesalazine acts locally on the mucosa of the colon where it diminishes inflammation by blocking the production of arachidonic acid metabolites, including leukotrienes, prostaglandins and hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids, and other inflammatory agents. Balsalazide disodium is used to treat chronic inflammatory bowel disease.

Drug Information

Anti-inflammatory agents that are non-steroidal in nature. In addition to anti-inflammatory actions, they have analgesic, antipyretic, and platelet-inhibitory actions. They act by blocking the synthesis of prostaglandins by inhibiting cyclooxygenase, which converts arachidonic acid to cyclic endoperoxides, precursors of prostaglandins. Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis accounts for their analgesic, antipyretic, and platelet-inhibitory actions; other mechanisms may contribute to their anti-inflammatory effects. (See all compounds classified as Anti-Inflammatory Agents, Non-Steroidal.)|Drugs used for their effects on the gastrointestinal system, as to control gastric acidity, regulate gastrointestinal motility and water flow, and improve digestion.
