Methods of Manufacturing

With stirring, 12.8g of 9-fluorenyl methanol was slowly added dropwise to the cooled phosgene-dichloromethane solution (7.12g of phosgene dissolved in 75ml of dichloromethane), and the reaction was allowed to stand for 4h after 1h. The solvent and excess phosgene were distilled off under reduced pressure to obtain 16 g of crude product. After recrystallization from ether, 14.5g of finished product was obtained with a yield of 86%.

Uses

Reagent for the introduction of Fmoc-amino-protecting group, which is stable towards acids but is readily cleaved under mildly basic non-hydrolytic conditions.
