Combustible2-DIMETHYLAMINOETHYL METHACRYLATE is both an amine and an acrylate ester. Amines are chemical bases. They neutralize acids to form salts plus water. These acid-base reactions are exothermic. The amount of heat that is evolved per mole of amine in a neutralization is largely independent of the strength of the amine as a base. Amines may be incompatible with isocyanates, halogenated organics, peroxides, phenols (acidic), epoxides, anhydrides, and acid halides. Flammable gaseous hydrogen is generated by amines in combination with strong reducing agents, such as hydrides. Esters react with acids to liberate heat along with alcohols and acids. Strong oxidizing acids may cause a vigorous reaction that is sufficiently exothermic to ignite the reaction products. Heat is also generated by the interaction of esters with caustic solutions. Flammable hydrogen is generated by mixing esters with alkali metals and hydrides.

AEROBIC: Using OECD Guideline 301E (Ready biodegradability: Modified OECD Screening Test) and a domestic sewage inoculum, N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, at 20 mg/L, was degraded 95.3% after 28 days of incubation which classified the compound as readily biodegradable(1). N,N-Dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, present at 100 mg/L, reached 89-94% of its theoretical BOD in 2 weeks using an activated sludge inoculum at 30 mg/L in the Japanese MITI test (OECD 301C)(1); however, the compound was noted to hydrolyze to N,N-dimethyl-N-ethanolamine and methacrylic acid(1,2). Therefore, the biodegradation results (indicative of being readily biodegradable) correspond with the biodegradability of the hydrolysis products(1).

12.3 Bioaccumulative potential

An estimated BCF of 2.6 was calculated in fish for N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate(SRC), using a log Kow of 1.13(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC).

Using a structure estimation method based on molecular connectivity indices(1), the Koc of N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate can be estimated to be 20(SRC).
