Sodium hydroxide known as caustic soda, is a caustic metallic base. It is mostly used as a strong chemical base in the manufacture of pulp & paper, textiles, drinking water, soaps & detergents and as a drain cleaner. Pure sodium hydroxide is a white solid, available in pellets, flakes, granules, and as a 50% saturated solution. It is hygroscopic and readily absorbs water from the air, so it should be stored in an airtight container. It is very soluble in water with liberation of heat. It also dissolves in ethanol and methanol, though it exhibits lower solubility in these solvents than does potassium hydroxide. Castor oil is a vegetable oil obtained from castor seeds. It is a pale yellow liquid with mild or no odor, & no taste. The oil has been used for illumination, soap, candles, the adulteration of olive oil, and making Turkey red oil. It is also used in formulating lubricants, softeners, paint and resin industries & dyeing assistants. potassium carbonate is a white salt, soluble in water, & insoluble in alcohol, which forms a strongly alkaline solution. Potassium carbonate is used in the production of special glass, fertilizer, potassium silicate, detergent, and in gas purification. Potassium carbonate (food grade) is widely used in pharmaceutical and food industries especially for making dried fruit such as raisins.
