Nongshim Fuels Food Tech Revolution with €6.9 Million Investment
South Korea's food and beverage giant, Nongshim, renowned for its diverse plant-based product range, is set to invest a substantial €6.9 million ($7.4 million) in cutting-edge food technology. The company is channeling funds into two Seoul-based startups, under the management of Stonebridge Ventures and IMM Investment, as part of its strategic move to engage with disruptors in the food value chain.
The masterminds behind the popular Shin Ramyun noodle brand are not merely investing but seeking to deepen their involvement in the dynamic landscape of food technology. Nongshim is fostering this venture to unearth "new growth engines" by aligning itself with startups that bring fresh technologies and innovative ideas to the forefront.
Nongshim's Pursuit of Innovation
The company's interests in food tech extend to alternative meat and smart agriculture. Veggie Garden, its vegan-friendly brand, covers a spectrum of plant-based offerings from bibimbap and bulgogi to grilled steak, dumplings, and cheese. Nongshim's commitment to transforming agricultural practices also involves partnerships, including a recent agreement with Saudi Arabia for the export of smart farms.
In another significant initiative, Nongshim sealed a €28 million ($30 million) project with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), aiming to establish smart farms producing South Korean strawberry varieties year-round.
South Korea's Emergence as an Alternative Food Hub
Nongshim's strategic investments align with South Korea's recognition as a burgeoning hub for alternative foods. The region is witnessing a surge in investment activity, responding to heightened consumer demand for meat alternatives. This trend is evidenced by initiatives like Taekyung Nongsan, a Nongshim-owned brand, launching ready-to-eat meat alternative products earlier this year.
SK Group's Advocacy for Alternative Meat
Chey Tae-won, Chair of SK Group, South Korea's second-largest business conglomerate, recently endorsed alternative food initiatives. Through his personal Instagram account, he highlighted images of fermented protein ice cream and cell-cultivated salmon, emphasizing the potential to consume fish sustainably without compromising taste or nutrition.
Alt-Meat Surge in South Korea
Alt-meat companies in South Korea are gaining momentum, rivaling the country's tech startups. Several firms raised over €3.5 million (5 billion won) in 2022, reflecting a 35% growth in the alt-meat market between 2020 and 2021, reaching a value of €12.9 million ($13.9 million). Last year's official endorsement by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, incorporating guidance for alt-protein in the National Plan, fueled this surge.
South Korea's Thriving Alternative Protein Landscape
South Korea, lauded as a "global hotbed of alternative protein innovation" by The Good Food Institute, boasts pioneering firms like Unlimeat, Lotteria, Armored Fresh, and Yangyoo, contributing to the region's flourishing alternative protein industry. Nongshim's strategic investments align seamlessly with this burgeoning landscape, propelling the nation further into the forefront of food technology.
