Celebrating Profitability: Akeso Bio's Remarkable Turnaround

ECHEMI 2024-03-05

Akeso Bio, a leading global company specializing in innovative biopharmaceuticals, has achieved a significant milestone by recording its first annual profit since its establishment. The company's financial forecast for 2023 indicates a profit of no less than 1.85 billion yuan, marking a remarkable turnaround from the previous year's loss of approximately 1.42 billion yuan. In this article, we delve into the factors that contributed to Akeso Bio's success and highlight its achievements in the field of biomedicine.

From Losses to Gains:

The primary catalyst for Akeso Bio's transformation from losses to gains stems from its core proprietary product, the dual-targeting antibody therapy known as Yida Fang® (Ivosidenib, PD-1/VEGF). The company's collaboration with Summit Therapeutics in the form of an overseas equity licensing agreement, valued at 5 billion US dollars, played a pivotal role. This agreement included a substantial upfront payment of 500 million US dollars, a majority of which has been recognized as licensing revenue, totaling approximately 2.9 billion yuan. The remaining portion of the upfront payment will be gradually recognized as operational income. Additionally, the innovative product Kadunni® (Cadolimab, PD-1/CTLA-4) contributed significantly to the company's sales growth by demonstrating outstanding clinical value and an expanding patient base.

Effective Cost Management and Research Platforms:

Akeso Bio's success can be attributed to its commitment to scientific and efficient cost management practices. While accelerating the development of innovative products and pipeline progression, the company has achieved remarkable results in cost control. Since its establishment in 2012, Akeso Bio has built an end-to-end research and development platform, the ACE Platform, which integrates Tetrabody bispecific antibody development technology, antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) technology, mRNA technology, and cell therapy technology. The company has developed over 50 innovative drug candidates targeting major diseases such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, inflammation, and metabolic diseases. These candidates focus on popular targets such as ADC, PD-1/CTLA-4, CD47, CD73, VEGFR2, IL-12/IL-23, among others.

Clinical Advancements and Future Prospects:

Akeso Bio has made significant progress in its clinical pipeline. As of now, 19 drug candidates, including six FIC/BIC bispecific antibodies, have entered clinical trials. Three new drugs, namely Annike® (PD-1 monoclonal antibody), Kadunni® (PD-1/CTLA-4 bispecific antibody), and Ivosidenib, have already been commercialized. Notably, Annike® has gained approvals for the treatment of relapsed or refractory classical Hodgkin's lymphoma and locally advanced or metastatic squamous non-small cell lung cancer. The company has also submitted applications for the third-line treatment of metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Furthermore, clinical trials for the treatment of liver cancer, gastric cancer, and other indications are progressing effectively.

Akeso Bio's achievement of profitability in 2023 reflects its dedication to scientific innovation, cost management, and the development of groundbreaking biopharmaceuticals. With a robust pipeline of innovative drug candidates and a commitment to advancing patient care, the company is poised to make significant contributions to the field of biomedicine. As Akeso Bio continues to thrive, it serves as an inspiring example of perseverance and ingenuity in the pharmaceutical industry.
