Enhancing the Intestinal and Liver Health of Carp: Study Reveals the Benefits of Adding Lactobacillus rhamnosus Fermentation Products to Feed
A recent study conducted by the Aquatic Microbiology and Feed Team at the Institute of Animal Feed Research, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, has shed light on the positive effects of incorporating Lactobacillus rhamnosus GCC-3 fermentation products into carp feed. The research investigated the impact of these products on the growth, intestinal and liver health, as well as the gut microbiota of carp.
In an effort to improve the growth and health of farmed fish, intensive aquaculture practices have become commonplace in recent years. However, high-density rearing environments can have detrimental effects on fish health. Concerns regarding antibiotic-resistant pathogens and food safety in the aquaculture industry have prompted the search for new, environmentally friendly feed additives.
The study specifically focused on common carp, a species of significant economic value, to evaluate the effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GCC-3 fermentation products on growth, intestinal and liver health, and gut microbiota. The results, published in the journal Aquaculture Reports, revealed several noteworthy findings.
The findings indicated that incorporating Lactobacillus rhamnosus GCC-3 fermentation products into the carp feed had several beneficial effects without compromising growth. Firstly, it reduced liver fat deposition in carp, promoting better liver health. Additionally, it enhanced the functionality of the intestinal epithelial barrier, thereby improving gut health. Moreover, the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria, particularly the genus Cetobacterium, in the gut microbiota was increased. Overall, the addition of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GCC-3 fermentation products to the feed proved advantageous for the overall health and cultivation of carp.
These findings provide a foundation for the development of novel feed additives aimed at improving the growth and health of farmed fish. By exploring alternative, eco-friendly solutions, the aquaculture industry can address concerns related to fish health, disease resistance, and the overall sustainability of fish farming practices.
