EU Commission Lowers Soft Wheat Production Forecast for 2024/25 to Four-Year Low
The European Union Commission recently released its monthly report, announcing a downward revision in the production forecast for soft wheat, barley, and rapeseed for the 2024/25 season. The anticipated soft wheat production has been adjusted to reach a four-year low due to a larger-than-expected decrease in planting areas.
According to reports from April 25, the European Union Commission has revised its production expectations for soft wheat, barley, and rapeseed for the 2024/25 season. Notably, the forecast for soft wheat production has been lowered to the lowest level in four years, primarily due to a significant reduction in planting areas.
The European Union Commission now projects the available soft wheat production for the 2024/25 season to be 120.2 million metric tons, slightly lower than the initial forecast of 120.8 million metric tons made last month. This revised estimate marks the lowest level since 2020. Adverse weather conditions, particularly heavy rainfall during the autumn and winter seasons, disrupted wheat sowing in certain regions of Western Europe. Despite the downward adjustment in production, the end-of-season stocks for soft wheat in 2024/25 are expected to increase by 100,000 metric tons to 12.2 million metric tons. This increase is attributed to a 500,000 metric ton upward revision in the current season's end-of-stock levels, compensating for the decrease in production.
In terms of future projections, the European Union Commission maintains its export forecasts for soft wheat unchanged at 31 million metric tons for both the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons. However, the import forecast for wheat in the 2024/25 season is expected to decrease to 4.5 million metric tons due to recent regulations limiting Ukraine's grain exports to the European Union. This decision was prompted by protests from farmers in neighboring countries who were concerned about the influx of Ukrainian grains into the European market.
Additionally, the report highlights an increase in the forecast for end-of-season stocks of soft wheat for the 2023/24 season to 20.4 million metric tons, surpassing the previous estimate of 19.9 million metric tons. The upward revision is primarily attributed to an increase in the European Union's import expectations for wheat from Ukraine, reaching 8 million metric tons. This reflects a significant volume of grain imports from Ukraine.
The European Union Commission's downward revision of the soft wheat production forecast for the 2024/25 season highlights the challenges faced by the agricultural sector due to adverse weather conditions and unexpected fluctuations in planting areas. The decrease in production underscores the need for careful monitoring and planning to ensure food security and stability in the European Union's grain market. The impact of these adjustments on trade dynamics and market prices remains to be seen, as stakeholders navigate the evolving landscape of the wheat industry in the region.
