Proposed Updates to Animal-Derived Food Processing Enterprise Information Reporting Regulations in the United States

In a recent announcement, the United States Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) revealed its intention to update the regulations governing the reporting of information by animal-derived food processing enterprises. This move aims to enhance the safety and transparency of the food industry. The proposed revisions include requirements for record-keeping, information submission, and collaboration with relevant government agencies.

On April 15, 2024, the FSIS issued Notice 2024-07996, outlining the proposed updates to the regulations governing animal-derived food processing enterprise information reporting. The main revisions are as follows:

1. Mandatory Information Submission: Meat, poultry, game, and rabbit meat production and processing enterprises would be required to maintain key information, including production records. They would also need to submit relevant information to the FSIS through the public health information system. Specifically, poultry processing enterprises must complete FSIS Form 6510-7 for each production batch and submit it to the FSIS after the production process concludes.

2. Official Inspections and Reporting: Based on the information submitted by enterprises, the FSIS would conduct official inspections, develop official sampling plans, and compile annual reports and budgets. Additionally, the FSIS would share relevant meat industry information and data with other agencies under the United States Department of Agriculture, such as the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS).

Feedback and Implementation:

The proposed updates are scheduled to be officially published in the Federal Register on April 16, 2024. Stakeholders and interested parties will have a 60-day feedback period to provide their comments and suggestions on the proposed regulations. Following the feedback period, the FSIS will consider the input received and make any necessary adjustments before finalizing the updated regulations.
