Al₂(SO₄)₃ compound name: aluminum sulfate | Explore its chemical properties

ECHEMI 2024-05-29

Al₂(SO₄)₃ compound name is aluminum sulfate, which is used in water treatment and papermaking industries and is also an effective insecticide for molluscs. Let's learn about its chemical properties through this article.

Al₂(SO₄)₃ compound name is aluminum sulfate, solid aluminum sulfate is white, gray-green or light yellow flake or block solid, and liquid aluminum sulfate is light green or light yellow liquid. It is soluble in water, acid and alkali, but insoluble in alcohol. The aqueous solution is acidic and generates aluminum hydroxide after hydrolysis.

We can see from Al₂(SO₄)₃ compound name that it can be obtained by the pressure reaction of bauxite and sulfuric acid, or by using sulfuric acid to decompose alunite, kaolin and raw materials containing alumina and silicon.

The sulfuric acid method is to crush the bauxite to a certain particle size, add it to the reactor to react with sulfuric acid, and the reaction liquid is settled. The clarified liquid is neutralized to neutral or slightly alkaline by adding sulfuric acid, and then concentrated to about 115°C, cooled and solidified, and crushed to obtain the finished product. Chemical reaction equation: 2Al(OH) + 3HSO + 10HO → Al(SO)·16H

1. Used as paper sizing agent in papermaking industry to enhance the water resistance and anti-seepage performance

2. After dissolving in water, it can make fine particles and natural colloid particles in water condense into large flocs, thereby removing them from water, so it is used as a coagulant for water supply and wastewater;

3. Used as precipitant, color fixer, filler, etc., and also used as antiperspirant cosmetic raw material-astringent in cosmetics;

4. In the fire protection industry, it is used with baking soda and foaming agent to form foam fire extinguishing agent;

5. It can be used as an analytical reagent, mordant, tanning agent, oil decolorizer, and wood preservative;

6. It can be used as a stabilizer for albumin pasteurization;

7. It can be used as a raw material for the manufacture of artificial gemstones and high-grade ammonium alum and other aluminates;

8. In the fuel industry, it can be used as a precipitant in the production of chrome yellow and lake dyes;

9. It can be used as an effective cross-linking agent for animal glue and can increase the viscosity of animal glue. It is also used as a curing agent for urea-formaldehyde adhesives, and the 20% aqueous solution cures quickly.
