Japanese company Kirin Pharmaceutical has officially launched a compensation process for individuals who may have suffered health damages due to consuming its red yeast rice health supplements, covering medical expenses and compensation for emotional distress. The company has explicitly stated that the scope of compensation is limited to "individuals who have developed kidney diseases or other symptoms after taking the supplement and whose causal relationship has been medically confirmed." Additionally, the company has received consultations from 170 deceased consumers' families, of whom 76 had taken Kirin's red yeast rice health supplement prior to their deaths, but the causal relationship between their deaths and the supplement is still under investigation. Three of the deceased have been confirmed not to have any relationship with taking red yeast rice health supplement, while the remaining 91 deceased did not take the product. Therefore, the confirmed number of direct deaths related to Kirin's red yeast rice health supplement is currently 5, while 76 deaths may be related to the product, with the specific circumstances still under further investigation. This incident has resulted in at least 5 deaths, hundreds of hospitalizations, and may involve more deaths, which has aroused great concern and worry among the Japanese government and public.
