Another significant difference in the epoxy vs epoxy resin comparison is the presence of an epoxy group (R-O-R structure) where these organic groups, can vary based on specific properties of the epoxy compound. Epoxy resins are made by reacting epoxide monomers with different compounds and have multiple epoxy groups with such compounds that can be represented as Rn-O-(CH2 -C(H)R’)m-O-Rn where “m” represents several chains and R, R', and n are inorganic compounds in these chains.
3. Epoxies can exist in a wide variety of types based on their differences in the specific formulation, curing conditions, and additives used. Epoxy resins on the other hand are a class of excellent dimensional stability and feature high strength and toughness.
4. Epoxy resins are commonly known for their strong curation properties which are practically important in casting, composite manufacturing, laminates, and mold-making. The whole class of epoxies is generally used for bonding various materials in both home and industrial environments including metals, plastics, ceramics, and composites.
5. Common examples of esters used in the industry are epichlorohydrin and glycidyl ethers. Novolac-based epoxy resins, cycloaliphatic epoxy resins, glycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA), and bisphenol-F (DGEBF) are common examples of epoxy resins that are mixed with suitable hardeners (as explained above).
