Vietnam's GDP Growth Reaches 7.09% with $25.3 Billion Foreign Investment Surge
Recent data indicates that Vietnam's GDP growth for 2024 stands at an impressive 7.09%, reflecting the nation's robust economic performance. Additionally, foreign investment has surged, with $25.3 billion flowing into the country, marking a 9.4% increase compared to the previous year.
As a representative of emerging economies in Asia, Vietnam has consistently demonstrated strong growth, with annual GDP growth rates stabilizing between 6% and 7%. This remarkable performance has led many to speculate whether Vietnam could become the next South Korea.
In 2022, Vietnam's GDP reached $409 billion, with a per capita GDP of approximately $4,110. The economy experienced explosive growth of 8.02%, setting a record since 1997 and making it one of the fastest-growing economies among the top 40 worldwide. The GDP growth for 2024 exceeded expectations, reaching 7.9%.
This economic boom has not only significantly reduced the unemployment rate to just 2% but has also driven local real estate prices to soar dramatically.
What lies behind this so-called "Vietnam Miracle"? Is it truly supported by the hard work of Vietnamese laborers?
The latest figures show that in 2024, foreign investment inflows amounted to $25.3 billion, which is a significant concept when compared to the $114.9 billion of actual utilized foreign investment last year—meaning Vietnam's attraction is equivalent to one-fifth of that amount.
Major corporations, such as Samsung, have established multiple factories across Vietnam, primarily producing mobile phones and electronic components. Intel has also invested $1 billion in a production base in the city of Ho Chi Minh. Numerous textile and home appliance companies have relocated their production lines to Vietnam.
Today, one in ten smartphones worldwide is manufactured in Vietnam, highlighting its rapid industrial growth.
Vietnam's economic expansion is driven by the influx of foreign enterprises and substantial investments, which not only bring capital and technology but also create numerous job opportunities, thus enhancing the living standards of its people.
The historical context reveals that after World War II, the global landscape transformed significantly. In the backdrop of U.S.-Soviet rivalry, nations began to forge tighter political and economic ties. Vietnam, after achieving reunification, faced the urgent need for national development amidst stagnation.
Despite the strides made in recent years, the race for economic advancement remains intense, with neighboring countries like South Korea having already established their economic foothold.
Vietnam's potential is significant, but the path forward requires careful navigation of both opportunities and challenges. The question remains: can it replicate the success of its regional counterparts?
