China and Indonesia Pledge Joint Push for Multilateralism in 8 Key Areas
China’s Premier Li Qiang has reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to deepening ties with Indonesia, stating that both countries will work together to advance “genuine multilateralism” in a rapidly shifting global landscape. The remarks came during a high-level meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, underscoring the two nations’ shared interest in strengthening regional cooperation and resisting unilateral pressures.
Premier Li emphasized that China and Indonesia are aligned on core issues, including support for development in the Global South, safeguarding regional peace, and promoting open trade. He stressed that both nations are determined to uphold fairer global governance structures, opposing hegemonic behavior and external interference.
The leaders also pledged closer coordination on initiatives such as the Belt and Road, green energy cooperation, and food security. Li said that the two sides will collaborate across eight priority areas, including digital economy, maritime development, and infrastructure investment.
China’s push for what it calls “true multilateralism” reflects its desire to reshape global power dynamics amid rising U.S.-China tensions. Jakarta, which has tried to maintain strategic balance in the region, appears increasingly open to deepening ties with Beijing as part of its own development agenda.
The meeting comes at a time when ASEAN’s role is being tested by major power rivalries. China’s outreach to Indonesia highlights its efforts to build a stronger coalition of emerging economies in Asia, presenting a collective voice against unilateral sanctions and geopolitical fragmentation.
