Negative factors weigh on palm oil market, leading to volatile declines in September
In early September, the palm oil market showed a mixed trend, with an overall upward trend. The positive factors for Malaysian palm oil were dominant. Specifically, from September 1st to 5th, the yield of Malaysian palm oil decreased by 5.70% compared to the same period last month. Supported by positive external factors, the overall market trend was strong. The futures price of Chinese palm oil increased, and despite weak demand in the terminal oils sector, the spot price of palm oil rose steadily. On September 9th, the closing price of Dalian palm oil was 9,486 CNY/ton, up by 48 CNY/ton. The futures market provided a boost, supporting the spot prices, which operated at a high level.
Starting from September 11th, the palm oil market welcomed an upward trend. The factors favoring Malaysian palm oil are predominant. Among them, from September 1st to 10th, 2025, the yield per hectare of Malaysian palm oil decreased by 2.70% compared to the same period of the previous month. The decline in Malaysian palm oil production led to a strengthening of the external palm oil market. The Chinese palm oil futures market also saw an increase, with the average market price of palm oil on September 15th being 9,400 CNY/ton, up by 50 CNY/ton.
Since September 16th, the palm oil market has been fluctuating and declining. The support from Malaysian palm oil has been limited. Among them, from September 1st to 20th, the yield of Malaysian palm oil decreased by 6.57% month-over-month and 7.89% year-over-year. Malaysian palm oil production has entered a seasonal reduction cycle, with an overall bullish trend. The external palm oil market shows mixed trends of increases and decreases. China's terminal demand for palm oil is sluggish, and the futures market for palm oil has significantly declined. On September 23rd, the main contract of palm oil futures closed at 9,054 CNY/ton, down 272 CNY/ton. The average spot market price of palm oil has fallen below 9,000 CNY/ton, a decrease of over 500 CNY/ton compared to September 16th.
At the end of the month, positive external market factors boosted sentiment, leading to a recovery in palm oil prices, which continued to rise steadily. As of September 26, the average market price for palm oil reached 9,208 CNY per ton, marking an increase of more than 200 CNY per ton.
Palm oil analysts believe: After November, the terminal demand for oils will increase, and the external market remains bullish, making a rise in the palm oil market expected in the future.
