Cipla CEO Calls Tirzepatide a High-Science Product with Strong Market Outlook
Cipla CEO Umang Vohra described Eli Lilly’s tirzepatide as a product backed by “superior science” and strong long-term commercial potential, as the company expands its presence in India’s fast-growing obesity-treatment market. Through a co-marketing agreement with Lilly, Cipla is promoting the drug under a second brand, a move expected to broaden access and engagement across patient segments. Vohra noted that the obesity drug space is undergoing rapid transformation and positioned tirzepatide as a therapy capable of delivering differentiated clinical outcomes compared with existing GLP-1 treatments. He added that patient education, monitoring and adherence support will become increasingly critical for market expansion. The remarks come as India prepares for intense competition when generic versions enter the market in 2026, with patient demand already rising due to shifting lifestyles and metabolic-health awareness.
