Sun Pharma’s Utreglutide Shows Promising Weight Loss and Liver Fat Reduction

ECHEMI 2025-11-16

Sun Pharma’s investigational GLP-1 receptor agonist Utreglutide has produced remarkable early-stage clinical results, offering encouraging signs for patients struggling with obesity and metabolic disorders. In a recent Phase 1b/2a study involving post-menopausal women with severe obesity, participants experienced an average weight loss of 8% over a 14-week period, with benefits sustained through week 17.

A majority of participants achieved meaningful weight reduction, and a notable subset exceeded a 10% loss. Given that the study population had extremely high average BMI levels, these results highlight the potential strength of Utreglutide’s therapeutic effect.

The drug also demonstrated a significant 28.6% reduction in liver fat content, far outperforming the placebo group. This positions Utreglutide as a promising candidate for conditions such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, where effective treatments remain limited.

Safety outcomes were consistent with those of similar GLP-1 therapies, with gastrointestinal side effects — including nausea and vomiting — being the most common. Overall, researchers expressed confidence in the therapy’s potential as development progresses.
