In a bold stride toward securing the backbone of the electric vehicle revolution, Australian-American battery materials leader Novonix is transforming industrial relics into high-tech powerhouses—right in the heart of Tennessee. The company has launched an ambitious dual-facility project in Chattanooga to build North America’s first large-scale synthetic graphite anode manufacturing ecosystem, directly confronting the continent’s heavy reliance on Chinese graphite supplies.


At the core of this strategy is “The Bend”—the reimagined shell of the former Alstom rail factory on Riverside Parkway. Once a symbol of 20th-century heavy industry, it’s now being retrofitted into a cutting-edge plant with an initial annual capacity of 10,000 metric tons of battery-grade synthetic graphite. But that’s only the opening act.


Just miles away, at the Enterprise South Industrial Park, Novonix is breaking ground on a greenfield facility designed from scratch for scale and efficiency. This second plant will boast an initial capacity of 30,000 tons per year, with clear pathways for future expansion. Together, the two sites will deliver over 50,000 tons of annual anode material production by 2026, enough to supply batteries for hundreds of thousands of electric vehicles annually.


Critically, these factories aren’t just about volume—they’re about strategic sovereignty. Synthetic graphite constitutes roughly half the mass of a lithium-ion battery anode, yet over 90% of global supply originates in China. By establishing domestic production, Novonix is answering a national priority: de-risking the U.S. EV supply chain. The timing couldn’t be sharper, as Washington intensifies incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act to onshore critical mineral processing.


Already, the demand is locked in. Panasonic Energy and PowerCo—the battery arm of Volkswagen Group—are among Novonix’s key off-takers, signaling strong validation from two of the world’s most influential EV battery players. Their backing underscores a broader shift: automakers no longer view anodes as mere commodities, but as mission-critical components requiring secure, traceable, and sustainable sourcing.


Beyond geopolitics, the project promises tangible local impact. Hundreds of high-skilled jobs are expected to emerge across engineering, operations, and logistics, breathing new life into Chattanooga’s manufacturing legacy. What was once a quiet industrial footnote is fast becoming America’s anode alley.
