Sumitomo Reclaims Dunlop’s Throne in Southeast Asia—Full Brand Rights Snapped Up Across Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei
In a strategic move to consolidate its global brand authority, Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) has announced the acquisition of exclusive, full trademark rights for the iconic Dunlop brand across Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei—covering tires, inner tubes, and tire repair patches. The deal, set to close in early 2026, marks the end of a fragmented licensing era and heralds SRI’s direct control over one of the most storied names in motoring history within this key ASEAN corridor.
Until now, these rights were held by a subsidiary of Continental Tyres Malaysia under a sub-licensing agreement—a layer of separation that limited SRI’s ability to fully align product strategy, marketing, and distribution with its global Dunlop vision. With this acquisition, SRI will assume complete commercial command, launching unified Dunlop-branded sales operations across the three nations starting January 1, 2026.
Notably, the transaction excludes aviation tires and winter tires, reflecting both regional market realities—where snow is nonexistent—and SRI’s focus on core consumer and commercial road segments. The move underscores a broader trend among Japanese manufacturers: reasserting direct ownership of legacy brands in high-growth markets to ensure quality consistency, accelerate innovation cycles, and capture full brand equity.
For consumers, the change may seem subtle—but for the industry, it’s significant. Dunlop, with its century-old heritage in performance and durability, now returns to the hands of its true steward in a region where urban mobility, ride-hailing fleets, and two-wheeler demand are surging. By cutting out intermediary licensing structures, SRI can tailor offerings faster, respond to local feedback more nimbly, and deploy its latest eco-friendly and fuel-efficient tire technologies without delay.
This isn’t just a trademark transfer—it’s a homecoming. And as Dunlop’s red-and-white logo reappears under Sumitomo’s direct banner from Kuala Lumpur to Bandar Seri Begawan, Southeast Asia’s roads may soon roll with renewed precision, backed by the full might of Japan’s tire engineering legacy.
