FSANZ Moves Toward Approval of Insect-Resistant Corn COR121

Food Standards Australia New Zealand’s move to accept the application for food use of genetically modified corn COR121 is another reminder that biotech regulation in developed food markets is usually a slow procedural march, not a dramatic political event. According to AgroPages, FSANZ on March 26 released its administrative assessment report and accepted Corteva’s A1349 application to approve corn COR121 for food use. The application had been formally received on February 9 and passed administrative assessment on February 26. 

 

COR121 is designed to express the IPD083Cb protein for resistance to susceptible lepidopteran pests, while also expressing phosphomannose isomerase as a selectable marker during transformation. That technical profile matters because insect-resistance traits remain one of the most commercially relevant pillars of crop biotechnology, especially where growers continue to face losses from moth and borer pressure. But this development is about food authorization, not cultivation. That distinction is crucial. It tells importers, processors, and grain-chain players that regulatory clearance for food use remains an essential piece of trade normalization even where planting approvals follow a different path. 

 

The larger signal is that regulatory access for new biotech events still depends on steady dossier progress and procedural discipline, not just trait value. Australia and New Zealand are often closely watched because their food-safety process can influence broader market confidence across the Asia-Pacific region. If COR121 advances, it strengthens Corteva’s ability to align crop innovation with food-chain approval rather than leaving new events stranded between farm utility and regulatory bottlenecks. In global ag biotech, those bottlenecks often matter as much as the science itself.
