What is simple distillation in chemistry is a process of distillation in chemistry where a liquid is vaporized by heat. The vapor pressure of the liquid drives it up the pot that contains the substance and condenses into a liquid substance on top of the collection vessel. In this way, it is possible to separate simple substances from more complex ones. This technique can also be used to purify substances with high boiling points or to study molecular interactions.
The most commonly used laboratory apparatus for simple distillation is still called a retort or still, due to its historical use in distilling beer and redistilling wine, but other common names include alembic and cucurbit.
The first use of a simple distillation apparatus for chemistry is said to have been by Georg Hartwig in 1663, in an experiment to separate water from alcohol. A later notable example is Antoine Lavoisier's experiment on the composition of water (1783), where he used a retort to produce hydrogen and oxygen.
Application of simple distillation
1. Distillation of vegetable oil
This can be done with any fatty oil like coconut oil or olive oil. Generally, this is done to purify the vegetable oil and remove impurity present in it, which makes it costly. This process is called deodorization process because it makes the oil pure. The impurity present in the vegetable oil are carbohydrates and water, so it is necessary that the impurities should be removed from this because these impurities make the vegetable oil rancid and may cause various problems in health. The process of distillation removes all the impurities from the vegetable oil so that there is no need to refrigerate them for a long time as they might rot other things kept in fridge such as milk etc. This shows What is simple distillation in chemistry.
2. Distillation of liquid samples
Examples of liquids which are distilled are gasoline, water, etc. It is done to purify them because it is easy to detect impurities in these liquids. In simple distillation the process of vaporization happens on a collection pot and condensation occurs on a receiving flask through the expansion of vapor pressure. This means that the vapor pressure drives the pure liquid up the collection pot and reduces its pressure causing it to condense into a refined liquid at the top of it. Various substances such as water, benzene, etc., can be separated by this process. The problem with this is that it takes time to accomplish what we want to do. We can use this process to purify the liquids that are more volatile but what we want to do is differentiate between the two and decide a set of parameters that suit our purpose so that the results will be precise and precise.
3. Distillation of solvents
This is known as crude distillation. Solvents are used in some chemical reactions and it is necessary for them to be pure otherwise there would be many types of problems like unwanted substance coming into contact with delicate materials and it could be harmful for them, etc., Distillation helps us in getting rid of all impurities from these solvents, so that they do not have any harmful effects on the components which react with them. Therefore, a simple distillation apparatus is used to separate the solvent from the mixture of both.
4. Distillation of water
This process is done to purify water and separate it from impurities present in it. There are many points in water purification that are not easily accessible for us as we cannot physically look into them with our eyes. For this we need to use instruments like spectrometer etc., But distillation process can easily solve this problem for us because it separates water from all other impurities so that we can actually see with our naked eyes that there is no other substance present in it except water, So now we can easily use this distilled water for various purposes . Distilled water is used for washing purposes etc.
