1. Carbon Dioxide

Complete combustion involves a sequence of chemical reactions between the fuel and oxidant (usually air) that converts the fuel completely into water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other byproducts. The chemical reaction may be written as:
C + O → CO + heat
The balanced chemical equation can be expressed in words as:
"one molecule of hydrocarbon plus one molecule of oxygen yields one molecule of carbon dioxide plus water vapor plus heat.
2. Water Vapor
When the products of combustion, carbon dioxide and water vapor - condense to a liquid, then you have water. Water can be left in the exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine. If there is enough water in the exhaust it will cause back pressure. Water may also block a catalytic converter causing it to fail. This is why you should not idle your car for a long period of time in cold weather because you will get condensation in the exhaust system and this can freeze on the catalytic converter and ruin it.
3. Unburned Hydrocarbons
What are the products of complete combustion? Unburned hydrocarbons are gases that can be found in tailpipe emissions and are what's known as atmospheric pollutants. The main components are methane, carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons.
4. Carbon Monoxide

Incomplete burning of natural gas, kerosene and heating oils gives off carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is deadly to humans in concentrations of 1000 ppm (0.1%) or greater. The amount of CO emitted by cars with a catalytic converter can be as much as 30 times less than that emitted without one-with more than 90% not emitted at all (in the form of CO).
5. Nitrogen Oxides
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are a group of gases that are emitted as gases or as NO2 in the form of fine particles. The main components of nitrogen oxides are nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide. Nitrogen oxides react with hydrocarbons and other compounds. This creates a small amount of ozone, another pollutant.
6. Sulfur Oxides
Sulfur oxides are created when excess oxygen reacts with sulfur-containing basic fuel molecules in an incomplete combustion process, resulting in an oxidized sulfur compound or sulfate aerosol. This causes acid rain; it also has a direct impact on human health by worsening respiratory conditions such as asthma.
7. Hydroxyacetaldehyde
Hydroxyacetaldehyde is a toxic degradation product of pyrolysis that can be found in vehicle emissions. One of the primary sources of this chemical is the thermal degradation of ethanol in gasoline caused by incomplete combustion. This can contribute to irritation, inflammation and cancer.
8. Formaldehye
Formaldehyde is a harmful organic pollutant that forms when organic material burns at high temperatures without enough oxygen present (such as in a car engine). It is extremely harmful to animals, including humans, even at low levels.
9. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a product of incomplete combustion that accumulate in the environment and in the bodies of people and animals. They can cause cancer in humans.
10. Carbon Particle
When there is incomplete burning of hydrocarbons, carbon particles can be found in the exhaust gasses. Because these particles can cause sooty deposits to form on buildings, homes and automobiles, they are considered pollutants that create health problems such as asthma and heart disease.
