Sodium salts (NaCl, NaHCO3) are the main inorganic salts that determine the osmotic pressure of extracellular fluid. Therefore, serum sodium concentration is the main factor that determines the osmotic pressure of plasma. Different changes in plasma sodium concentration and osmotic pressure occur due to different proportions of water and sodium deficiency. Dehydration is often clinically divided into three types according to the serum sodium concentration: isotonic dehydration, hypotonic dehydration, and hypertonic dehydration.
