Osteomalacia and rickets are bone diseases characterized by a disorder of mineralization of the newly formed bone matrix. As a result, non-mineralized bone-like tissue (osteoid) accumulates, the bone softens, and a series of clinical symptoms and signs such as bone pain, bone deformity, and fractures occur. The causes of this disease are varied and can be divided into four categories: ① Vitamin D nutritional deficiency. ② Defective metabolic activity of vitamin D. ③ Mineral deficiency in bone mineralization sites. ④ Disorders of bone cells and bone matrix. Rickets are caused by damage before puberty, that is, before the closure of the growth plate of the long bones to the closure period. In adults, damage to bone mineralization after the closure of the epiphyseal growth plate is called osteomalacia.
