Polycythemia vera in the elderly
Polycythaemia vera is a clonal, chronic myeloproliferative disease of unknown etiology characterized by a significant increase in red blood cells. It is characterized by a significant increase in the total number of red blood cells and total blood volume, usually accompanied by an increase in granulocytes and thrombocytosis; increased blood viscosity; bone marrow hyperplasia, often with myelofibrosis and extramedullary hematopoiesis in the late stage; enlarged spleen, unique red-purple skin and mucous membranes, and a variety of vascular and nervous system symptoms.
