Hypothyroidism in the elderly
Hypothyroidism is a systemic disease caused by insufficient synthesis and secretion of thyroid hormones or insufficient physiological effects. It can occur at any age and is not uncommon in the elderly. Literature reports that the prevalence of clinical hypothyroidism in the elderly aged 65 years and older is about 1% to 5%, and another 5% to 15% of the population has subclinical hypothyroidism. The prevalence increases with age and is even higher in hospitalized patients.
