Acute empyema
Acute purulent pleurisy is abbreviated as empyema, also known as acute empyema. It is caused by the accumulation of purulent exudate in the pleural cavity due to infection by purulent pathogens. According to the scope of involvement of the pleural cavity, it can be divided into localized (cystic) empyema and total empyema. If combined with pleural air accumulation, it is called pyopneumothorax. The disease has an acute onset and is mostly spread from infections of adjacent organs such as the lungs, esophagus or abdomen; or it may be caused by sepsis or septicemia involving the pleural cavity; it may also be a complication of penetrating chest wall trauma or a complication of chest surgery.
