Post-polio syndrome
Post-poliomyelitis syndrome refers to an acute infectious disease caused by a group of neurotropic viruses. It mainly damages the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord, causing the motor nerve fibers to change and causing flaccid paralysis of the muscles they control. This disease is more common in children under 5 years old, so it is called "polio". A small number of children are left with post-poliomyelitis syndrome, with atrophy of the affected muscles and failure of nerve function to recover, resulting in deformities of the affected limbs.
