Scleredema
Scleredema is a rare disease of unknown cause that usually has a benign course. It is also a systemic rheumatic disease: it is characterized by the sudden onset of severe symmetrical edema and induration of the skin throughout the body. The characteristics of the skin lesions are similar to the changes that occur during the edema phase of systemic scleroderma. The disease usually resolves on its own within 6 to 12 months, but occasionally it can last for decades. Curzio (1775) first reported the disease. Pifford (1876) discussed its clinical and pathological characteristics in more detail. Bushkle (1902) confirmed it as a special independent disease.
