Adrenaline poisoning
Epinephrine (adrenalin) and norepinephrine (noradrenalin) are commonly used emergency drugs. Overdose can cause poisoning. A small number of patients are highly sensitive to epinephrine, and adverse reactions may occur even at therapeutic doses. Children with pre-existing hyperthyroidism and cardiovascular diseases are also more sensitive to epinephrine and are prone to poisoning. Small doses of epinephrine can excite the central nervous system and can be used to treat anaphylactic shock. Large doses of epinephrine can excite the central nervous system and cause convulsions, and can inhibit the respiratory center. Excessive amounts of epinephrine can also cause acute pulmonary edema.
