Ischemia of the great radicular arteries supplying the thoracolumbar spinal cord
This group of root arteries mostly come from the intercostal arteries, or from the upper lumbar arteries and (or) external iliac arteries. After entering the vertebral canal along the intercostal nerves or lumbar spinal nerves, they participate in the formation of the anterior central spinal artery of the middle and lower segments of the spinal cord. The thoracic segment reaches the 6th thoracic cord above and the 4th sacral cord below; the lumbar segment is from 12th thoracic cord to 5th sacral cord, mainly supplying blood to the front 2/3 of the spinal cord.
