Lingual thyroid gland
During embryonic development, part or all of the thyroid gland does not descend and stays at the foramen cecum of the tongue, which is called lingual thyroid gland. The thyroid gland in the normal position of the neck accompanied by the lingual thyroid gland is also called parathyroid gland. The thyroid tissue is all concentrated at the root of the tongue and there is no thyroid gland in the normal position of the neck, which is also called aberrant thyroid gland. This disease is rare in children, but more common in women during sexual maturity, pregnancy, and lactation.
