All localized abscesses located below the diaphragm and above the transverse colon and its mesentery are collectively referred to as subphrenic abscesses. The most common abscess is in the right suprahepatic posterior space, which is related to the direction of lymphatic flow and the influence of respiratory movement. The intra-abdominal pressure in this space of the abdominal cavity is the lowest. The next most common abscesses are the right subrahepatic space and the right suprahepatic anterior space. The left subphrenic abscess is relatively rare. Subphrenic abscess is a secondary infection, and its location is related to the primary disease. It can occur in one or more spaces. It is characterized by obvious systemic symptoms and hidden local symptoms. There are many complications and a high mortality rate, and early surgical drainage is required.
