Vitamin A hypervitaminosis
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that is related to bone growth, epithelial tissue metabolism and regeneration, and the storage of retinal rhodopsin. Vitamin A can interfere with the metabolism of chondrocytes, affect the synthesis of chondroitin sulfate, increase the amount of bone under the periosteum, and cause fibrosis of the medullary cavity adjacent to the spongy bone. Large doses of vitamin A can increase the number of osteoclasts in the bones of mice, increase bone resorption, and make fractures more likely to occur; it can also cause premature healing of dog growth plates.
