Posterior tibial neuralgia
Refers to pain that spreads along the posterior tibial nerve distribution (neuralgia). The posterior tibial nerve passes through a fibrous bony canal within the fimbriae ligament at the level of the ankle and splits into medial and lateral plantar nerves at the exit. Tarsal tunnel syndrome refers to compression of the nerve within this fibrous bony canal, but this diagnosis has been loosely applied to posterior tibial neuralgia of varying causes.
